COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Saddle bronc rider Jake Wright is on the road to recovery from his latest right knee surgery.

Wright, who has qualified for the last seven Wrangler National Finals Rodeos, had right knee surgery on May 23 and Aug. 27.

Wright said the latest surgery, which was done at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, was an osteotomy, where Wright’s doctor cut the tibia and reshaped it to relieve pressure on the knee joint.

Wright’s 2019 rodeo season came to an end July 11 when he suffered a hairline fracture to his right ankle and a concussion following his 83.5-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Buckin’ Crazy at the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colo.

“Since I was going to be out, I decided to have surgery (in August),” said Wright, 30. “After they cut my tibia and realigned my joint, they put a quarter-inch plate with seven screws in it. It was bone-to-bone and that’s why my knee was hurting so much.”

Wright said he will be full weight-bearing on his right knee in a week.

“I have no timetable to come back," he said. "The doctor said I would be cleared in six months at the earliest. I want to make sure I’m 110 percent (healthy) when I come back. I’m not retiring.”

Wright was 28th in the July 9 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $28,089. Unofficially, he finished the 2019 season 43rd in the standings with $28,968. Wright had his career-best finish of second in the world standings in 2013. He was 11th last year.

Wright has been battling injury woes to his right knee since initially injuring it in 2014 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

“I’m really glad I got my knee fixed,” he said. “They told me if I would have kept going, my knee would have been ruined and I would have been done riding broncs in the next year or two. Now that I fixed it and if I get it strong, I should be good for years to come.”

There was a silver lining for Wright being sidelined, as he was able to spend more time at home in Milford, Utah, with his wife, Loni, and their son, Tripp. Loni just gave birth to the couple’s second son, Rocky, Oct. 1.
